DESIGNING PATH OF A MASTERPIECE
by Stefano Bigi
Design to me is an infinite, exasperated research towards the right balance between aesthetics and comfort, form and function. I try to create an emotion, to invite people to sit or to use my furniture when they see it.
My search goes towards those who disregard standards and uniformity, although with different needs and desires. I draw furniture for those who see a chair not mere like a seat and four feet. I do not intend to create pieces for museum collections, my furniture is made to be lived and to live with its owners. That's why I love the hidden footstools, poufs, perfect to receive unexpected but very gradited friends.
The round, harmonic forms, the sectional pieces transmuting in time… always looking for an atmosphere, a peculiar environment, a separate space, a space apart. Home furniture which is no more constraint but desire.

I also consider comfort a top value, as creating desire is just a side effect of my job. If design tempts, comfort retains the customer.

A piece of furniture is not just a designer's output to me: it is the result of the cooperation between designer's insight and manufacturer's technical skills, between the form and the technical imperatives.
Balance between innovation and rationalization, this is the engine pushing me towards new horizons.

My inspiration comes from my love for nature and for the seventies. I love the seventies for their airiness, for their denying conventions, for that feeling permeating the air which allowed to create anything.
I love movies like Easy Riders, a continuous, infinitive source of emotions for the environment and the peculiar atmosphere.
From the designer's world, the visions which influence me are mainly from Pierre Pauline, Werner Panton and Achille Castiglioni. Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong era… then my mind goes back to the beloved Seventies, they help me express my creativity at best.

Born in 1974, Stefano Bigi grew up across France and Italy.
Out of this double culture, he has acquired a taste for the chic and the beautiful.
After his education at Art School in France, he started a career in webdesign at first with a French SSII, before
becoming self-employed.
During these nearly 10 years, he never gave up sketching sofas, decorative objects and on top his
obsession: chairs. However, only when he turned 31 he decided to live for his passion :
to design furniture and decorative objects.
In 2005 he moved to Milan and founded his own company:
Helldesign di Stefano Bigi.
CLIENTS: Porada, La Cividina, Exdè by Cattaneo, Colico design, Seltz...
